After a week exploring the lovely beaches of the Gower near Swansea, South Wales, it was back home to the woodlands of the Wye Valley. My quarry this trip was the wonderful golden nugget of loveliness, known as the Chanterelle, to my mind the king of eating mushrooms. I know a small spot which produces a crop weeks earlier than the other places I know, I have no idea why but they are most welcome. I was a bit worried that my time on holiday would have allowed some other avid mushroom hunter to get his/her grubby little hands on my precious (which happened last year) but no, there they were! It seems unlikely that all the other fungi fanciers in my area have met an untimely demise, so I can only assume that they are on holiday too, I hope they have as much fun as I did. Always remember the Golden Rule when hunting mushrooms: if you snooze, you lose! In public woodlands, wild mushrooms are there for all to pick. Although it can be disappointing to miss out, never get down hearted. Remember, the next mushroom is just around the corner, happy hunting
